And he would tell us that his teacher asked his class if anyone knew how to count. “Tell us about counting in kindergarten Kenny.” I’d say. He had one story that he told to me a few times - usually at my suggestion at a poker game - to lighten the mood. He did, recounting stories of his family, growing up in Brockton, and playing poker. He would cheerfully suggest that he help. He would arrive, typically, 45 minutes before the start time - usually before I had started to set up the tables, chairs, chips and the like. And I really loved his enthusiasm.īefore too long, I started to host games at my house. We were the charter members in the “POKER IS GOOD” club. And we played at each other’s house and at fundraising tournaments that we’d recommend to each other. We’d call each other up when our own home games needed players. We’d meet again, and he’d turn me on to some other place. Invariably, I’d bump into him at one game, we’d talk, and he’d invite me to some other game. He convinced me to give a dozen or so different poker games a try. He planned on spending his social security check for trips and play in poker games all over the place. He explained that he was from Brockton, and was soon to be retired - and loved poker. He told me about a regular game that was opening up in Boston - and invited me to play. He came up to me with his 100 watt smile and told me he liked my poker article. I first met Ken in a poker room…of course! I don’t recall which one. ![]()
